Courses & Careers In Healthcare

There are many careers in healthcare that you can consider. Here are some popular ones.


If you want a career that contributes practically to the health and well-being of other people,you should consider a career in healthcare. Generally,you need to have studied biology, chemistry and mathematics at SPM and pre-university to gain entry to courses that can lead to careers in healthcare.


Medical doctor


Generally,a doctor examines patients in order to diagnose and treat illnesses using medicines and surgery.They can also specialise in the treatment of specific patients (eg children, elderly,women etc), parts of the body (skin,kidneys,digestive system,heart, bones), or illnesses (cancer,hypertension, diabetes etc). Medical studies take five years to complete after which graduates have to train in hospitals before getting their licence to practise. If you want to practise in Malaysia, make sure your course is recognised and approved by the Malaysian Medical Council. Places on medical courses are limited so students need to have above average grades to get in.Medical study is expensive so make sure you're committed to the course and have the passion for the career.

Dentist


Dentists diagnose and treat diseases and conditions related to the teeth and gums. Besides cleaning,filling,and extracting teeth, dentists also fit dentures and perform dental restorations such as crowns and bridges, and treat oral diseases. In addition,dentists educate patients on oral hygiene. In order to perform more complex procedures such as oral surgery, implants,orthodontics etc, dentists need to take additional qualifications or training. They can also choose to specialise in various areas such as endodontics, periodontology and dental public health. All dental practitioners practising in Malaysia are governed by the Dental Act 1971. Under the Dental Act 1971,every dental practitioner must be registered with the Malaysian Dental Council and practitioners  are required to obtain an Annual Practising Certificate in order to legally practise dentistry in Malaysia. Therefore,it's important to make sure your course is recognised under the Dental Act.A course in dental surgery
takes five years to complete.

Pharmacist


Pharmacists prepare and dispense medicines,provide information and advice on medicines, and work with patients in managing long- term illnesses.Pharmacists work in hospitals,pharmacies, pharmaceutical companies, government and regulatory agencies, and in universities. A course in pharmacy takes four years to complete and you will learn about disease- causing microorganisms, synthesis and manufacture of drugs,and how drugs

Nurse


Nurses work in a variety of settings from hospitals, nursing homes,public and private health institutions, to private homes. They provide care and support to patients and help them improve their quality of life. You need a diploma in nursing to work as a nurse. Students can also pursue a degree in nursing. Upon passing the registration exams, they would be registered with the Malaysian Nursing Board.
